252 MW Wind Power Plant Gulf of Suez – Egypt

Combating climate change is a global concern.

Egypt is rich in renewable energy and has taken an important step towards modern and sustainable energy with the commissioning of the 252 MW Wind Power Plant Gulf of Suez. Since December 2023 the wind power plant is in operation and contributing long-term climate-neutral energy for its projected life span of approx. 20 years.

Thus, renewable energy covers part of Egypt’s energy demand and limits emissions in the energy mix. Every year more than half a million tons of CO2 emissions are saved by the wind power plant. A win-win solution for the environment and for Egypt.

The Wind Power Plant is the result of a strengthened cooperation on energy and climate between European Development Partners and Egypt. They entered a strategic partnership on renewable energy, hydrogen and energy efficiency with this milestone project. Renewable energy can play a remarkable and reliable role in energy supply for the Egyptian population. Sustainable development, energy security and a balanced, ecological transition are key for future development.

The windfarm is owned by the New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA, Cairo) and financed by the European Union (EU), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through KfW Development Bank (KfW) as leading financier, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency (AFD).
